Richard Varr, Travel Writer and Photographer
Welcome to my website. I am a former newspaper and TV news reporter, and now a Houston-based writer and member of the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW).
I’ve traveled the world for more than three decades – from Patagonia’s icy fjords and South Africa’s Sabi Sands to dusty Cairo streets and Romania’s wind-chilled Black Sea shoreline. I’ve seen the “Face in the Mountain” on New Zealand’s Aoraki/Mt. Cook, breathed the thin air at Machu Picchu, jet-skied on the Baltic Sea, walked Shanghai’s pedestrian-packed Bund and visited some 70 countries and overseas territories in between. I’ve written hundreds of magazine and newspaper stories, online articles and blog posts about my travels for more than 20 years.
What’s my favorite place in the world? The answer is simple – my next destination.
Despite hassles with delayed flights, shifting itineraries and jet lag, I strive to make every new adventure as exciting as my last. My happiest days are on a road less traveled or even well traveled – it really doesn’t matter. I love exploring the ancient tombs of world history and pulsing metropolises, and gazing upon the Earth’s gifts – natural wonders, aquamarine waters and sunlit panoramas, while doing my best to spread some good will and friendship to those I meet along the way. My travels fill me with renewed energy, passionate excitement and the yearning to write about what I see and how it makes me feel. It’s been a great journey with more to come.
Welcome to my world. Join me in seeking new travel adventures and life-changing experiences. It will make the world a better place.
